Satan lives in idle time and insecurities.
Pinterest is one of those things that's so simplistically brilliant everyone wonders simultaneously why they didn't think of it and how they ever lived without it.
I've eaten so many tomatoes this summer I started getting sores in mouth. One might think it would be good to eat fewer tomatoes. Or one could eat the same number of tomatoes and start popping L-Lysine like there's no tomorrow. I chose option two.
I will never tell Jonah that the frog does not, in fact, say "Jibbit Jibbit." Pure cuteness will always reign supreme over meaningless technicalities.
I don't believe there are people who actually wake up and WANT to go exercise. I take that back. I know they exist, I just try not to be friends with them.
If I never again have to fill out a hand-written 31 page family profile describing my deepest most personal feelings/crap from my past/traumatizing life circumstances etc in full paragraph answers, it will be too soon.
Jonah has super sonic train hearing. Even when he's not watching train videos on YouTube, if one is playing and it ends, even if he's in the other room, he immediately knows, comes to the table and makes me turn on a "eerant (different) one". This goes on during most of his waking hours. (I will be glad when Fall arrives and we can go outside again.)
To be continued (some random day in the future)...

sheesh
Tonight's two pages.
The letter is here so you can stop squinting now.
And I would tell you how long they took me, but honestly, it's starting to get embarrassing.
And I would also tell you that I couldn't upload these TWO photos without buying more photo storage space from Google...
and that when I went upstairs to get my wallet, I knocked my Nifty Fifty onto the floor...
and that I feel like my blood pressure is sky rocketing right now...
and that I feel like being a sarcastic Sassy Pants because I just read Boo Mama, and she always makes me feel sassy...
But I won't.
Instead, I'll give you some Jonah and Daaapid cuteness to make your Monday night (err, almost Tuesday morning) a little cheerier.
You're welcome.
And on a super happy note, we are now out from under the holds of DirecTV. Take That, satellite company. Sometimes it feels really good to fight The Man. Why, Hello, Time Warner Digital Cable, so good to see you and your far superior DVR... ohhhhh High Def. How delightful. For $40 less per month? Don't mind if I do!

here goes nothing
My mom called me earlier tonight and said she needed some blog entertainment. I think we've all been stuck in our respective houses a little too long. We did get snow after all. Well, sort of. We got about an inch of snow with a glaze of ice over it. You know, just enough to be nasty and dangerously slick. Not actually the kind of stuff you want to take your just-barely-walking toddler out in. So... blog material.... blog material.
Here goes nothing. Like literally.
Last week I got some free yogurt at Harris Teeter because of sales and super doubles. I'm not a huge yogurt eater, but it was some kind of vanilla strawberry fruit parfait stuff with granola, and it was pretty tasty. Something about free tastes so good.
I made spicy shrimp and grits tonight. It was pretty good except that I somehow got red pepper in my nose. It burned for at least 30 minutes. Kind of took away some of the inherent awesomeness of the meal.
I got my books today! I am so pumped to get started. We're doing Radical with our group at the end of January. So I'm thinking "Calm My Anxious Heart," but am really anxious to start "Crazy Love" too. Decisions, decisions.

I ordered some brown boots (mine were literally cracking in half... they were obviously not good quality) from Old Navy last week. They came today. I think I should have ordered a 7 1/2 but I'll make do with the 8. Partly because I bet they're out by now, but mostly just because I don't like having to send stuff back.
I drove to Target today, thinking I was the only one who knows how to drive in the snow. I bet that's what people are thinking right before they slam into a guard rail.
I had to drop off a package at Staples to ship via UPS today. It was a return (I know), so it was already paid for. But I didn't feel safe nor did I have time to go across town to the post office to mail my other package. So I just decided to mail it through UPS too. 2.9 lbs and $13 later, I decided never to do that again. Good grief.
Jonah has counted "one, two, three, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten," "one, two, three, night night," and "one, two, three, five, turtle!" in the last two days. Yeah, we're working on it.
Jonah is now sleeping with a hard, green plastic ball because he wouldn't let it go. We pick our battles.
Deac will go down the partly icy steps but won't come back up them. I don't think I need to tell you how annoying it is to have to go outside in the freezing cold weather, down the stairs in nothing but your t-shirt, pj pants, and socks to rescue your foo foo dog. I love him, but he's a pansy. Truth.
My mom makes the best Chicken and Dumplings in the whole world. I'm not kidding. (She brought me those too.)
Yesterday when Jonah was playing with his Laugh and Learn pony, he counted to ten with the video. I was impressed. But then, after reaching ten, he said "AH, AH, AH!" like the Count on Sesame Street. I was overwhelmed with his cuteness.
Tomorrow I'll be cutting coupons and trying to get more free yogurt. The excitement never ends.

more than you want to know
Katherine always seems to help me out when I feel I’m in a bloggy slump. I know that my posts, as of late, have not been very riveting (or “ribbiting” as I said to my sister this week after she said she rescued a frog out of the pool at camp… what? That’s totally funny. Matt didn’t think so either.). Anyhoo, she had these questions and answers posted on her blog and told those reading to consider themselves “tagged.” As I am not one to (often) ignore a (not-so-official) tagging, it was my bloggy duty to follow her lead. (Warning: this is long and possibly not that interesting… I don’t know seeing as how I haven’t answered them yet… so feel free to skip this one.)
What experience has shaped you most and why?
I guess this one is an easy and obvious one for me…
Receiving my GPS. Without a doubt, this little apparatus has greatly changed my life for the better. Without it, I seriously don’t know where I’d be. Get it? As in “I’d be lost”? But in the physical rather than metaphorical sense. Get it? Oh yeah, and motherhood has changed me a lot too… mostly for the better though I do find there are days now when I cuss like a sailor.
If you had a whole day with no commitments, what would you do?
Unbeknownst to Matt, I’m currently planning a day for myself like this. Because that’s just how utterly selfless I am. I’ll have to do dressing change because that just can’t be helped but THEN, I’m going to go get a greasy breakfast and read a book while I eat and nobody is allowed to talk to me. THEN, I’m going to go to a used bookstore and take forever perusing the aisles, lovingly touching all the book spines, and picking out several books of my very own. THEN, I’m going to go to a few scrapbooking stores and spend way too much money. THEN, I’m going to meet some girlfriends for lunch, and we are going to spend the afternoon shopping and hanging out. And we will also spend way too much money. And then I will come home, help get Jonah fed and ready for bed, and then I will go to bed early and get approximately 9.4 hours of sleep. Ribbiting, I know.
What food or drink could you never give up?
Mexican Food. I know that’s a whole category rather than one single food, but seriously, I couldn’t give up tortilla chips or pico or enchiladas or burritos or refried beans or tacos or any of it. It’s all so magically delicious, it really wouldn’t be fair to isolate just one Mexicanny goodness. And those who know me also know that asking me to give up food, any food, is like asking me to please just stop breathing. Thusly, this is a difficult question.
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
This one is hard too. I’d love to go to Hawaii (my hopes for our ten year anniversary) the most. But I’d also like to go back to Mexico and Argentina and to the rest of the Spanish-speaking countries. I’ve only been to Mexico, Nicaragua, and Argentina. Spain would be awesome, and I’d also like to go to Ireland. But if I had to choose JUST one, okay, Hawaii. Fine.
Who do you have a crush on?
Jonah. Also known as Jonut, Baby J, the J-Man, Sweet Babe, Jumping Jonah, Ja-nonah, and J-dizzle (okay, I made that last one up.)
(And also, Marky Mark.)
If you were leader of your country, what would you do?
I have no idea because I would never ever want that job in a million years. I feel so sorry for the President and all of the past ones actually. People criticize them too much and pray for them too little. I’d definitely have to start by making regular hair-coloring appointments for when my hair started to go gray.
Give me one savory recipe that doesn’t include cheese.
I can’t. The Squash Muffin one is pretty good, but I don’t think you can even describe a recipe as “savory” UNLESS it has cheese. On second thought, I bet those muffins would be pretty good with some cream cheese. It definitely wouldn’t hurt!
What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
It was actually always a teacher, I think. I was an idiot.
If you could spend just one day in someone else’s body, who would it be?
I would say somebody who had a really sexy body, but then I would probably choose the day of her hardest workout routine, and honestly, that just doesn’t sound like fun to me. So, I think I’d pick somebody who’s funny and most everyone loves. Tina Fey would be good. But I guess she kind of has a sexy body too. (Shut it, Matt) So I’d just choose to be Tina Fey on a relaxing, binging, off day, because she’s going to have to deal with the leftover calories from her day off, not me. (And also, she knows Marky Mark… “I bet you do all kinds of right.”)
Which woman writer, living or dead, do you admire most?
Julia Alvarez. Look her up. She’s Dominican and her stuff is so good.
What character trait inspires you the most?
The word “inspires” makes me want to throw up a little bit, but I like when people are really honest and funny and real. And randomly break into a Bon Qui Qui voice and cuss at random. (MS, I am talking to YOU.)
What is your favorite kind of music?
I mostly listen to Christian, but music-wise, it’s not my favorite. I like stuff from the late 60’s and early 70’s and also dig some older country (90’s) now and again… but mostly just for karaoke purposes.
What is one fact about you that most people who know you wouldn’t guess?
I am a very difficult person to live with and extremely moody. Or maybe people would guess that. Maybe I only THINK I’m good at hiding it. Another is that I have major teeth issues. MY teeth are in great shape, but I have serious MENTAL issues with people talking about, wiggling, or showing me loose teeth. I have recurring dreams that my teeth are falling out. My sister does too, so at least I know I'm in equally crazy company.
If money were no object, what's one thing you don't own now or can't afford to do that you'd like to have or do?
Is it way pathetic that my first thought was a mini-van? Yep, I’m just that exciting. But seriously, if we ever do get one, I will probably wet my pants from excitement.
I think I’m supposed to make up my own question for the end, but I just don’t have the brain power to do that. Feel free to consider yourself tagged though. If you are as desperate for blogging material as I am, this will make your day. It did mine.

Jonah's good, but we just put him to bed and he immediately threw up all over himself. Clean up was a pain. Thus the lack of brain power. So tired.

fun sneak peeks on the fan page
Um, so I've sort of been out of the Facebook (and blog and Twitter) loop these last couple days but there's some fun stuff and some great sneak peeks going on over at Jonah's EB Auction Fan Page on Facebook.
You should definitely check it out! I'm getting so excited. I probably should have been better about saving up... self control may be a problem.
Also, this is not a for real blog post but I'll post my random thought from yesterday:
Random Thought of the Day: Stubbing your pinky toe on your left foot really, really hard on your child's new (humongous) exersaucer may be the most excruciating pain in the world. Yes, I've given birth to two children. I stick to my previous statement.

I'm so sorry, Vermont. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. You poor things.

25 random things
This is a post going around on Facebook. Since I had done all the work of writing it, I decided to post it here too. I was tired of seeing the pictures of my big feet right beside the picture of sweet Gabe. I wanted to move it down. So here's a new post, without all the work.
(In no particular order)...
1. My first son was stillborn at 37 weeks this past April. We named him Gabriel Matthew, but we call him Gabe. He was 6 pounds, 14 ounces and beautiful. They never found a cause. We wouldn't trade those 37 weeks for anything, and the pain of missing him is totally worth it to have had him.
2. We are anxiously and excitedly awaiting the arrival of baby boy #2. I will be induced the day I turn 37 weeks, February 27th.
3. I am a blog addict. I feel about blogs the way Matt feels about espn.com. I especially love blogs that can make me laugh out loud. I think it should be a requirement for all of my out-of-town friends to have a blog. I'm thinking about instituting this as a rule to our friendship. Prepare yourselves.
4. I have texture issues with food. I will not eat coconut, cottage cheese, grits, pears, certain types of apples, and many other things because of this...except I will eat Caramel Delite (Delight?) girl scout cookies. They don't seem coconutty.
5. I hate it when you are the only person in a ten stall bathroom, and then someone comes in, and even with all those open stalls, they choose the one RIGHT next to you. Can't a girl pee in peace?
6. It really bugs me when people say, "I could care less." The phrase is really, "I couldn't care less." Think about what you're saying, people. If you COULD care less, then you could care less than you do right now. And the whole point of the phrase is that you don't care AT ALL...you COULDN'T care ANY less.
7. I don't know much about grammar, but I do have a hang-up about the misuse of the words "less" and "fewer" and "number" and "amount."
8. Although I love to read, I have a hard time with non-fiction books. I've been reading The Audacity of Hope for a year, and I'm not even half-way through. Ironically, though, Blue Like Jazz is one of my favorite books ever.
9. I don't like sports (much to my husband's dismay), but I do like Panthers football and love Wake Forest basketball.
10. I like to scrapbook, but I'm not very good at it. I take over a whole room with all my crap, and take 3 weeks to clean it up. I got a new digital scrap booking program for Christmas and am excited about using it... much more convenient, much less mess, no need for the ability to cut in a straight line.
11. I speak Spanish fluently.
12. My favorite food is taco salad...the kind you make with Old El Paso seasoning, not the kind you buy at a restaurant. I could eat it every day.
13. My favorite dessert is cheesecake. I also really like fruit pies and cobblers. I'm not a huge chocolate lover, but I'll pretty much eat whatever you put in front of me... even when I'm not pregnant.
14. I like to work out but hate dieting. Carbs are great. I don't know how to cook (or eat) without them.
15. I have been to Argentina, Mexico, and Nicaragua. I would love to travel to all the other 18 Spanish-speaking countries, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Israel (or anywhere else).
16. Ever since Gabe died, I have to make the bed every day before leaving the house. I don't know why.
17. I have slept with a stuffed animal my whole life and still do. Growing up it was Little Foot. Now it is the teddy bear they gave us at the hospital when Gabe was born.
18. All I really want to have when I'm sick is Kathryn's mom's chicken and rice soup and Sonic chocolate milkshakes.
19. I taught high school Spanish for four years. I love teaching, but hate all the other stuff that goes with it (dealing with idiotic parents who think their child can do no wrong, detached administration, grading papers, staff development, working 15 hours a day). Don't ever say to a teacher, "You're so lucky. You get the summers off." It's very likely you'll get slapped in the face.
20. I now work at Young Life. I'm assistant Regional Director... I mean, assistant to the assistant to the Regional Director. I work with two of the greatest women I've ever met. It is such a blessing to work, play, laugh, cry and pray with them.
21. I disliked Matt all through high school, but we started dating on a senior trip the week after graduation. We owe our whole relationship to Mrs. Blythe's Spanish 5 Trivial Pursuit Fridays, Jamie who predicted we would get married when we didn't even know each other, and Jesus (not necessarily in that order).
22. My favorite TV shows are Lost, The Office, and Grey's Anatomy. I also enjoy 90210 in syndication. The new one is stupid.
23. I really like being outside, listening to live music, and little things like going to the farmer's market and shopping for used books.
24. The majority of my wardrobe is from Target and Kohl's. But I'll only buy my underwear from American Eagle.
25. I like saying what's on my mind (see "not me" post), most of the time to a fault. I think Matt gets embarrassed by it, but I'll strike up a conversation with pretty much anybody about pretty much anything. One time I started talking to this random older man in the grocery store about what bacon I should buy. Sometimes people react well. Sometimes they act weird about it. Either way, I usually just keep on a'talkin'. Life's too short, you know?
But I'll only buy my underwear from American Eagle.

not me monday
Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.
At one point this week, amidst all the coughing and sickliness, I most certainly did not think to myself, "Holy amniotic fluid, Batman! I think my water just broke!" Only to realize a few seconds later that I had just peed myself. And if that ever were to happen, there's no way I would write about it on my blog. That would be so embarrassing.
My wonderful husband most assuredly did not look at our dog on Friday morning as I sat on the couch, after my fourth night of very little sleep - hair a complete mess, snotty nosed, puffy eyed, chapped lips, breathing like something out of a horror movie - and say to him, "I married your mommy for her looks, Deac. She has very little going on up here (pointing to his head)." He would definitely not do that.
And there's no way I've been joking around to people that I have the gestation period of an elephant (without subtracting the 10 week "break" I had between pregnancies, I'll have been pregnant from August of 2007 to almost March of 2009), and then in an effort to figure out how long their gestation period actually is (22 months!!!), I certainly didn't run across some very scandalous photos of elephants in extremely compromising positions.
There's no way that I had the worst hot flash ever one morning last week, and so decided that I absolutely did not need a coat over my light-weight shirt nor would it be a good idea to bring one with me. I didn't then have to load car seats and little girls into and out of my car (while they wore snow jackets, hats, and mittens) or walk a block from my car to my job at Young Life in 20 degree weather, while being sick, all without a coat, long after the hot flash had passed. That would be so stupid.
I did try to hang a heavy wooden frame on the wall in the living room following the directions that said to start a small hole, use an electric screw driver to twist in the plastic anchor, and then twist the knob into that anchor. After all of that was a total bust and I had put a huge hole in my painted and textured wall, I did not, however, completely give up (after having made a Lowes trip to buy a new kind of anchor) and just glue the nice fancy hanging knob to the wall using some kind of super-duty concrete adhesive. No way, man. Not me.
And finally, I did not forget most of these posts from the time I thought of them in one room to the time it took me to find a piece of paper and pen to write them down (approximately 30 seconds). It didn't then take me 3 days to remember them and finish up this post. That would be an indication that I have a horrible memory or that the growing of a child somehow impairs my ability to think, which we all know is not true.

Only to realize a few seconds later that I had just peed myself. And if that ever were to happen, there's no way I would write about it on my blog. That would be so embarrassing.
I definitely have not spent way too much time this past week thinking about how gross my house is but seriously contemplating whether or not I can wait for the "deep clean" I have planned for the weekend before the baby comes (I love you, mommy), so I only have to clean once. I mean, it would be totally disgusting to wait 4 more weeks to clean my house when there are already rings in the toilets and scum in the tub. I would never do that...not me.
At my first Non-Stress Test on Thursday, they definitely did not zap the baby with some crazy apparatus to get him to start moving. Furthermore, I did not secretly think, "Muah-ha-ha! Take that baby! That'll teach you not to move, you little..." That would be so non-motherly and vindictive of me. I did not then consider how to sneak the zapper out of the office in my purse, only to realize that the nurse had taken it out of the room with her when she left. Maybe she thought she saw the crazy look in my eyes that most certainly was not there.
At this same non-stress test, I definitely did not look down to see this:
I surely don't have to tie my shoe laces on the sides now, because putting on my shoes like this is impossible...
... so that this is now the new norm.
That would be so pathetic.
I definitely did not make Sonic Chocolate milkshakes the staple of my diet this week, claiming that they were the only thing that made my throat feel better. That would be so nutritionally irresponsible of me.
And I most certainly did not read this on the new medicines they've given me this past week...
... and think to myself, "What the heck," and throw it all back like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, just because I was so miserable I could barely stand it. I would never put my needs before the baby's. Not me.
