DVD suggestions?

If there are any DVDs that really kept your child's attention at Jonah's age, can you let me know in the comments? I'm putting in an Amazon order today for some new "have to keep Jonah's attention for dressing change and eating sessions" DVDs, and I'd love some suggestions.

The Leap Frog Letter Factory is already in my shopping cart. Thanks, Kathleen.

Mostly this is because our DVDs are starting to skip, but partly it's because if I don't get to listen to/watch something new, I'm going to go nutso. I seriously don't know how many times you can watch the same episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba without completely losing it.

Thanks for the help. :)

My daughter LOVED Elmos world and the Wiggles at Jonah's age. Blues Clues was also a big hit. But get the newer episodes because Joe in the older ones was boring. :) Good luck!

Lil Man loved Disney's Fox & The Hound II. He has the first Fox & The Hound movie but he liked the second one better. He also loved Finding Nemo.

My son paid more attention to videos with real people in them instead of cartoonish characters. My son is 19 now, so I don't know what's on the market -- but Gymboree had a couple great ones. There was one about going to the zoo that was his favorite.

Sesame Street/Elmo's World, Blue's Clues, Fireman Sam, Thomas The Tank Engine and Little Einstein's are the hits right now.

My son loved the Wiggles. Honestly, so did I. :) They are a lot of fun and the music isn't so annoying.

Little People (came with playsets my kids got as gifts, but I think you can buy them individually, but beware, Aaron Neville sings a little ditty before each one), Curious George (the movie, not the pbs episodes)

THE WIGGLES! I know I sound crazy, but my son has loved them since he was Jonah's age, and still likes to watch their DVDs (he's 24 months now). They'll drive you nutty, but in a good way! :)

My 20mo son is OBSESSED with Dora and Deigo. Id start with Dora since that seemed to be who he liked first.

Did you ever try Praise Baby? All worship music with images much like Baby Einstein but these held Jonah's attention while Bay Einstein never did. I've given them as gifts and had the same results. Even for kids almost 2.

My little boy has loved and been obsessed with Barney ever since we introduced him to it when he was 1. He is now 2 and still loves to watch Barney. To this day, this is the ONLY show he will actually sit still and watch. Hope you find something before you loose your mind! I couldn't watch Yo Gabba Gabba everyday, that's for sure! hehe

my older sons loved the wiggles at that age, and my nine month old loves them now. You might try that! Oh and they have always loved Dora, and still do!

At his age...Elmo's World and Barney. Both equally annoying on the ears, but the kids love them and really, they teach decent things. My daughter learned a lot from both of them. Good luck!!

Cedarmont Kids!!! Awesome!! You can get them at Lifeway or probably any Christian Book Store for $10. Our favorite is the pink one - Toddler Tunes.

I work at a Day School that has ages 1 to Pre-K at it and we had a "movie" day at the end of the year. We put that in and we were all amazed by how much the kids loved it. It is just kids singing (and "acting" out) kids songs. It is awesome!

If he likes music, Cedarmont kids are great. There are several kinds-Bible songs, Sunday School songs, Worship music, Toddler songs, silly songs...my 2yr old loves them. We also watch a lot of Hermie and Friends. There is a show called Lil Buds, I think there are only ABCs and numbers out. But they are great for teaching little ones the basics along with music and Bible verses.

My son is almost 22 months and loves Brainy Baby.

The DVD is fairly inexpensive. I love it because they are longer than most DVD's like the Wiggles or Elmo. Also, my favorite part is it has an auto replay option!!! Perfect for long car rides!!! I don't have to pull over and restart the DVD player!!!

My daugther (3.5 years old) LOVED (and still does!) the Praise Baby DVDs. They are about 30 minutes or so of contemporary christian music set to neat scenes. She was enthralled at Jonah's age and still adores them. They are sold through Amazon and you can also check them out at www.praisebaby.com.

You can also pick these up for 5 bucks at walmart and target. And, I promise you...you will like it MUCH BETTER than yo gabba gabba... Wiggles was another favorite at 18 months along with ANYTHING elmo! I think all the music is so neat to them at this point in the brain development? Hope you find something he loves!

I agree with the Glenn Gang, Praise Baby has the worship music going (there's a kid or adult singing option on the menu, which is nice for Mom's ears) and the changing images/shapes really seemed to hold our boys attention for those mama-needs-a-time-out-before-she-goes-crazy moments. I think the music made the difference and my boys always liked them better than Baby Einstein. They are 3 and 5 now and still pull out a Praise Baby DVD to dance around the living room to every once and awhile (they've learned some great worship songs that way, too). Hope you find something that works, girl! You are one tough cookie!

My son doesn't watch any tv, but I had the movie "UP" on the other day (in Spanish) and he was mesmerized for 5 minute chunks throughout. It's got lots of music and colorful balloons... my son is just shy of 18 months.

Radar's Mom said...

To clarify - my son doesn't watch tv because it normally doesn't interest him... I'm a single mom, so as much as they say tv is bad, I often would love just a short break and tv is usually one way of getting a break.

My girlie loves her some Elmo's World. The DVDs are usually about an hour long because they put 3 segments all together on one disc. I.e. the one about the Great Outdoors has a segment on wild animals, fish, and weather. Also, Elmo has a DVD called "Kids Favorite Songs 2" AWESOME! :) Baby Einstein (specifically the ones about animals) were also great. She doesnt even mind one of those now and she is 2 1/2.

If your DVDs are skipping, try cleaning your DVD player. It is supposed to be cleaned after every "so many hours" of watching (can't remember how many) It looks like a DVD, you put it in and it does the work. You can find them at Best Buy (or the like) and maybe even Wal Mart--I mean Target. :)

Instead of DVDs we sometimes turn on the Qubo Channel it is chanel 29-1 here is Sacramento Ca. Not sure if you can find it on your TV, but it plays shows like Babar, Jane and The Dragon, Maisy, etc. Both my kids love it! Another video we were just introduced to is called Let's Talk with Puppy Dog Baby Phonics. It is for ages 0-18 months. The only thing I do not like about it is that it teachs them to say things like "Soapy" instead of soap and "Juicy" instead of juice. Other then that it is cute and keeps my 1 year olds attention. Leap Frog Letter Factory is a great choice too! I agree with the others that were mentioned as well.

We just discovered Netflix. We used to have Blockbuster online. They now have a program where you can watch them off your tv or computer whenever you want for no additional charge. It is unlimited. There are literally hundreds to choose from. For kids, there is Elmo, Kipper?, Calliou, and tons others. Plus, lots of kids movies. It is so awesome and for only about $13.00 a month...who can beat that? I highly recommend it. Plus, you can watch grown up movies too since it is hard to get out of the house. We watch them off our tv through the the internet on our Wii, but there are other options too.

KathleenSBass said...

Oh yeah, wanted to add "Word World" and "Super Why" are educational and mesmerizing for our 13 month old, Whitney. And Elmo's "Kids Favorite Songs" is mind-numbing if watched more than once a week, but works on a rainy day :)

Noah likes They Might Be Giants' Here Come the ABCs. He also likes anything Elmo.

Not sure if you use Netflix (or if you have the capability to set up a computer near Jonah's eating/changing areas) but I have the plan that is lik $16 a month which allows me 2 DVDs out at a time, unlimited.

But I also get to watch stuff instantly online for no extra fee & also unlimited. So I can pick a variety for Noah. And its sorted by age/genre. Plus its nice to be able watch movies/TV shows for Noah's parents!

My daughter at a year old was already becoming Dora The Explorer obsessed, I blush to say! My son loved Dora too, and Go Diego Go. Both loved Baby Einstein. There was one DVD about farm animals that came in one of those touchy-feely books we got at WalMart and my kids would drop everything and just stand in front of the tv screeching with laughter at the baby animals. That's how my daughter learned her farm animals and their sounds.
We don't let them watch much anymore because it was causing alot of behavioural problems. It's just that, especially with my daughter, TV tended to overstimulate and make her wildly hyper and prone to acting out. She's such a sweet little angel when she's been away from the junk box for a while. :) Thankfully my son is much less influenced by the tv. As long as we made sure there was nothing that him copycatting would be problem, tv didn't seem to cause problems for him. But then he also is less into watching TV at all. Go figure.

Hi Patrice - Jonah is too cute! My son and niece love to watch old episodes of Seasame Street (circa 1980s - same ones I used to watch so they bring back memories for me too!). My mom purchased a box set for around $15. Good Luck!

Baby Einstein helped my youngest speak clearly when she first started talking, and "They Might Be Giants: Here Come the ABC's" was a lifesaver for me. They've also come out with "Here Come The 123's" and "Here Comes Science," but the ABC's was my favorite for a young age.

Our boys both love to watch Brainy Baby Videos---Left Brain and Right Brain. My 3 yr old watched them all the time when he was younger and now he watches the Brainy Baby Spanish too. Our 1 yr old watches the left/right brain ones now and loves them! The dvds have lots of learning, classical music, and real babies/kids. :)

Gosh, if you can spare about 9 dollars a month I highly recommend Netflix. You can instant download movies for Jonah, or order them through the mail. And it would provide limitless entertainment in the way of movies for you and your hubby.

But, if you want to go the way of buying dvd's I have to recommend the Mighty Machines series....total testosterone joy for boys!

It won't help your sanity much but Barney is mesmerizing to them, so are Tele tubbies. Defiantly Blue Clue's Elmo's Word, Bob The Builder, Handy Manny, Mickey Mouse Club House, and Thomas. My kids are 8 and almost 5 and will still pick these sometimes.

Hi,
When my daughter was smaller she loved "Richard Scarry's Best Learning Songs Video Ever". It has catchy songs and teaches shapes, letters, etc. She also loved the Baby Einstein dvds and the Wiggles.

Baby Superstar Farmer and Baby Superstar Explorer. Winnie the Pooh ABC's (and 123's, but they liked ABC's better). Anything Baby Einstein (Baby Neptune, Baby Mozart, etc. Actually our kids are now 5, 4, and 2 and still love these.). And one specific Bible Songs video from our library, but there are so many called Bible Songs that I'd have no idea how to lead you to the correct one.

Oh! I forgot about Praise Baby. They're good. And my kids absolutely love Baby Faith movies!

My son is just a few months older and after reading your comments the only thing I would add is Dinosaur Train. Not sure if you can find that on DVD but we DVR it from PBS every day bc my son is hooked.

I know that it sounds crazy, but my daughter (who is 3 now) really loves our dvds of the first season of Jon & Kate + 8. I think that she loves watching those kids & the fun things that they do!

Thomas the Tank Engine is a great one as well as another I haven't seen mentioned yet....

Teletubbies

My kids loved it. You gotta be able to tolerate it yourself though. I never minded it, but a friend of mine WOULD NOT let her kids watch it. The repetition drove my friend nuts!

Cedarmont Kids has all sorts of videos. They are all of kids singing songs and doing actions to them. They are TOTALLY cheesy, but my little guy loves them. They were taped back in the early 90s and you can completely tell. I enjoy them because they remind me of my childhood. Why did our parents dress us that way? Ha!

We have Action Bible Songs and Silly Songs. I also like them because they have Christian/Sunday School type songs that I love to sing with my little boy. He is two, but got his first one at age one.

My 22 month old has always loved Backyardigans. Have you considered netflix to trial some dvds? We've been going through Backyardigans ones from there to supplement the 30+ episodes on the dvr. The best dvd so far has been the Robot Repairmen one. There are also a lot of kids shows available on demand through netflix. If you have a macbook you can get an adaptor and plug it into your tv for a bigger screen.

Shaun the Sheep is my son's favorite (he's almost 17 months old). The show lasts about 5 mins but we record several back to back and play all at once. Also, Yo Gabba Gabba holds his attention when mist shows won't. good luck!

My boys love GodRocks! Even my Jonah, when he was younger than 2, loved them. And the best part is that the kids learn scripture by singing along. www.godrocks.ca

I hope Jonah loves them, too. Oh, and they have books, music CDs, and tons of other accessory items that you can purchase along with DVDs.

My kids loved the Signing Time DVD's as well. Fun music and they learn to sign! My daughter knew almost 200 signs by the time she was 18 months old.

I was going to suggest Gabba since my daughter loves this show but I see that you're burned out. My daughter loves anything with music in it. Like Laurie Berkner and Choo Choo Soul. Choo Choo Soul can get old quick though but it's got some beat to it. She also loves the Imagination Movers (I too am a fan). Also, are you familiar with Jack's Big Music Show? That's a good one too (in my opinion anyway). I'm with you on Barney and the rest you listed that you just can't bring yourself to watch. I can't do it either. Though I am forced to watch Dora from time to time. Which is quite painful.

First Impressions DVDs. They are educational... numbers, letters, animals, sounds, etc. My daughter is 15 months old and will watch them because her 2 1/2 yr old brother is completely fascinated by them. But he has enjoyed them since he was about 1 1/2 yrs old. I just bought the 10 disc set from Amazon for $34. Our library has a few of them, so you may want to try them out to see if they catch his attention. I haven't gone nuts watching them yet, I am far from sinking low enough for Barney or the Wiggles. My son has also loved World Word on PBS since he was 18 months old and I needed him occupied so I could pump for his sister when she was in the NICU. Best of luck keeping your little one still long enough for the feedings and dressing changes. He is a cutie!

I have to LAUGH at the losing it part. I work as a NICU nurse and we have "big babies" that we joke think some of the veggie tale characters are their family because they watch and "talk" to the movie ALOT more than they will us! Veggie tales, Letter Factory and Words World videos have my votes. Educational and only slightly able to make you insane! We love Dave videos...he does "There goes a...(fire truck, plane, monster truck, something else all boys like to watch." Dave is VERY silly! but the boys love the movies and they are real people and things that might be good for someone who "doesn’t get out much" instead of just cartoon characters

Cedarmont kids DVD's - you can find them at most Christian book stores. Also, my daughter loved the Baby Einstein (with the animals) and the Praise Baby DVD's.

Hopefully I'm not repeating someone else's suggestion, but I flipped through and didn't see this one. I would highly recommend the "Your Baby Can Read" DVDs. It's the only thing I've ever purchased from an infomercial (splg?) and both my girls (currently 3 yr and 18 mon)love them! Not only do they love them but they are both reading. My 3 year old started recognizing her first words at about 22 mons (shortly after we purchased the videos/books/cards) and can now read virtually anything you put in front of her. My 18 month old has begun recognizing words too. Besides enjoying the videos they also love the books and other products that come with the set. It sounds a bit expensive when you first look at it but when you consider the number of videos and books as well as other things you're getting it's really not so bad. Especially since it truly does have educational value! Plus I found the parents guide on how children learn and develop pretty interesting. If you decide to make the investment I hope Jonah throughly enjoys it as much as my girls have! :)
