Jonah had a sleepy day today. Long naps, and we got him in bed by 9:45... a new record! We'll see if he stays asleep. It's Matt's night to get up with him tonight. Actually, we both get up, but it's Matt's night to stay up with him. The person who gets to go back to bed gets up and makes the bottle, while the other quickly gets Jonah (to prevent face-rubbing), changes his diaper, and does the feeding. It's also the go-back-to-bedder's job to change out Jonah's bedding (he's usually either peed out of his diaper or has blood/drainage on the pillow case we put over the sheet). It's a little more complicated than "normal" alternating night schedules, but it works for us, and we get a little more sleep that way.
Two days on the avocado, and so far, it's a no-go. I can't blame him though. I think it's pretty gross myself. But it's a really cool color, and I bet it would make his poop look really neat. Too bad he's not interested. I'm always looking for something to make diaper changing a little more exciting. (I babysat a little girl in high school who liked to eat a lot of fruit loops, and let's just say her technicolor poop was the highlight of my day. Literally.) Sweet potatoes are up next, and then apples. I don't know why I'm so excited about making his baby food. Maybe since I didn't get to nurse and he's off breast milk now, it just makes me feel like I'm "providing" something for him. I know that's not really rational, but all that baking, peeling, and food processing give my stay-at-home self a little more purpose.
I even made homemade salsa. That's right. I'm domestic. You know you like it. (I owe all of my pureeing success to the Magic Bullet. Worth. Every. Penny.)
Here are some pictures I took of Jonah today right after dressing change.
(Thus all the Aquaphor. Please excuse his greasiness.)

Patrice! It's like looking at a little YOU! He is so gorgeous. My three year old walked up behind me and the first thing he said was "That boy's eyes are SO BLUE!!!!"
My daughter loved butternut squash and it was really easy to make. I used this website: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ to get "recipes."
Thank you for sharing your baby boy with all of us.
He is so precious.
How funny. I made homemade salsa today, too!
Jonah gets cuter everytime I see him! Look at those baby blues!
I've read your blog for awhile, but I've never commented before. I had to let you know that he is one of the most beautiful babies that I have EVER seen. You are a wonderful and blessed mother.
what a cutie!! wow, he looks JUST LIKE HIS MOMMY!! you guys could be twins, ya know, if he was a lot older, and you were a lot younger, and ahhh....well, you get my point. ha!
I agree the Magic Bullet is the best thing ever. My son Jack didn't like avacado either, but he loved it when I mixed it with bananas and made a banacado or apples and made a applcado. Yummy! Give it a try I even thought it was good.
Has he had bananas yet? you can try mixing bananas with the avacados - I will admit it is so TASTY!!!! I would eat it with them and I am not a huge avacado fan!
I totally didn't read Lyndsay's post before writing...
Jonah is so precious!
And I really enjoy reading your blog and appreciate your honesty, humor, and am delighted you share it with all of us!
Those eyes get me every time!
He's really growing. Nine months of age was always my favorite time with my biological children. Jonah is a doll. I think he's looking more like his momma, too.
I love his little camo shirt, and can't believe how much hair he has! I am very impressed with your baby food making skills too. I have never made baby food a day in my life!
~Amy
I am with Kimberly, THOSE EYES. They are going to break hearts!
I think its wonderful that you are making his food. I wish I had to have had the chance to do so but as a working mother of two...just getting foog on the table was a miracle. God bless you and I think you are fantastic, mommma!
Love how thick his hair is getting! =)
Love those baby blues!!! He is such a doll!!!
He is darling!
Check out those bright blue eyes!
I feed my son a blenderized diet too...He's actually tube fed and I do continue to supplement with a special formula specifically for lung disease.
I use a little black and decker food chopper but secretly drooool over the Vitamix :0)
Waaaaay outta my price range and I'm sure yours too. If you get a letter from the ped. on the necessity of the blenderized food thats all Vitamix needs to apply the discount. I'm not sure if that would work in your situation?
I'm in a yahoo group of mommies for those who feed blenderized food specifically tube feeds. Many have the Vitamix and many have gotten it at the discount. There are also several who couldn't afford the Vitamix even at the discount and use the Magic Bullet like yourself. I've thought of upgrading to it but am still holding out for the Vitamix ;)
If you think you might be interested I can get you the email and name of the lady with Vitamix. Just let me know :0)
I can also give you the link to join the group if you'd like. There is a wealth of information on there and tons and tons of ideas/recipes and even mommies who post their childs menus which is very helpful to those just starting out....
We're HUGE aquaphor fans by the way and I think his greasy little mug is just adorable!
Squeezably cute :0)

THOSE EYES!!!
Enough said.
Love from TX!
Laura
He is such a Cutie!!! Have always wanted a Magic Bullet, but even though we have had our "Oscar" food processor longer than we have had our children (we are talking 1/4 of a century here!), it is still going strong.
Remind him he needs to like avocado so he can enjoy guacamole!!
Way to find your inner-domestic-goddess ... I don't know if I have one! lol!
FYI - from my babysitting days ... BooBerry cereal made quite the bright green poop, and I too thought it was kinda cool [insert embarrassed smiley here]
ahem ... moving on ... I could just look at that sweet little Jonah all day!
Those baby blue eyes...wow! You have a heart breaker on your hands. So glad to hear that he is getting to bed earlier. I am so impressed with your baby food making ways!
no gusta avocado?? what the freak??? He's supposed to love it.. They are so fatty and good for him! :) Silly boy..
This is really disgusting but I mash a little banana in with it and he gobbles it up! We call its bananacado! Wait until he tastes sweet potaotes.. He's going to LOVE them!!!
(p.s. I love making his food too. I am a working mom but I truly truly enjoy it.)
Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only mommy out there that likesan interesting poop! Just wait 'til that precious (adorable) baby boy starts eating corn and carrots!
I think its wonderful that you are making all his food for him ~ I never had the patience for that...nor can I cook (I've nearly burned the house down TWICE - that's right, TWICE making grilled cheese sandwiches!).
You are an awesome mommy, I get so much joy from reading your blog. thank you so much for sharing your little man with all of us <3
Much love ~
Sara
¿no le gusta el avocado? yuck ¡a mi tampoco!
Jonah looks great in these pictures, thanks for sharing!
Look at how big he's getting! Oh, he's sooo precious!
I used to love making baby food too. Got to the point where I was pureeing an entire roast dinner.
Just wait until he's a year old and add 1 TBSP honey to the avocado and he will INHALE it! My kiddos hated avocado too and then I started making "salsamole" which is 1/4 cup salsa (mild), 1 avocado and 1 TBSP honey. It is gone before I even get it to the table and my kids are 1 and 3 now.
Something to look forward to...my almost 2 year old daughter will ONLY eat the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms cereal (high nutritional value don't ya know?). It also makes a BEAUTIFUL neon green color in the diaper! She also gets it when she drinks fruit punch (which doesn't happen often).
The new photos are awsome! Jonah is beautiful! He is starting to look like you...
He is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!! All I ever see when I look at him are those stunning blue eyes. Such a sweetheart you have and I think it's great you're making his own food and providing for him that way. Yay for you! I agree with some of the others...he looks SO much like you Patrice. Hope the evenings/nights continue to go well for you! Continuing to pray for your sweet little man!
Patrice - he's really looking like you in these pictures! Love that you are making homemade baby food...I'd like to do the same. Cheaper and you know exactly what's in it!
I've read your blog for a long time but have never commented. Just wanted to say baby Jonah is precious and he looks so much like you. Love his expressions! My son has also had lots of health issues and he is about to turn 8 this month. Jonah is blessed to have wonderful parents! Keep posting!
And yes he will love sweet potatoes!
Hmm... Aqui en Bolivia decimos "palta". Interesante!
If you rest the avocado/palta/aguacate and come back to it, he just might like it! Sometimes it takes time to get them used to a new food. =)
I made Landon's baby food with a Magic Bullet, too. I know what you mean - it is addicting! I wanted to breastfeed but ended up giving up due to postpartum depression and such, so that's an interesting concept about providing for the baby.
Hey Patrice - I noticed someone else suggested this too, but try mixing the avocado with banana or even sweet potato when he gets to that point. I also found that mixing less appetizing veggies like broccoli with applesauce helps. My daughter loved spinach with vanilla yogurt and banana. Eww!
I made all my of my kids' baby food using a food processor and froze it in ice cube trays. I still puree things like spinach, carrots and broccoli to sneak into our food.
What a cutie!! I must say I think avocado is an acquired taste as well. Sometime our son will eat and others, well lets say he fake gags (it kinda funny). On the diaper changing front, our son is a total wiggler, I probably get more poop on me than off of him. Saying this I try to distract him by singing a song or something like that, but that was no longer working. So I thought of sometime new ~ being the lover of all things Christmas, I dug our a few of my many singing & dancing Christmas things. Bennett loves them, its really funny he tries to dance to the music & he'll lay there for the most part clapping his hands & let me change is diaper. My husband says now every time he hears a Christmas song he's going to want a diaper change. Oh and blueberries make a colorful poop, just in case you were wondering.Have a great day! (Sorry for the long comment)
When my daughter was around 1 1/2 (she'll be 9 in a couple weeks) she developed a liking for Fruit Loops. Around the same time her poop started turning bright green! Luckily I put two and two together and soon, no more bright green poop. It was entertaining for the time being, though! Cute pictures of Jonah :)
I know spanish w/ help at work:
no le gusta el avocado=
He does not like avocados.
You're not fooling me.
Love the CAMO SHIRT!
PRAYERS ALWAYs
2shoes
Radar also doesn't like the aguacate and I was sure with his Latino blood that it would be a shoo-in... oh well! I also love making baby food for Radar and I love my magic bullet! A couple of nights ago I made a pea and banana mix... sounds gross right? Well, not to the expert pallet of my 8 month old... it was yummy, yummy, yummy and made for some beautifully mushy poop later in the day! Don't you just love talking baby poop!!!???
Oh and btw, I parrot the others who said that Jonah is really starting to look like you. You can see the hyper-awareness, curiosity and intelligence in those beautiful blue eyes! What a sweet cutie pie you have!
He is so darling. Last night I was re-reading your blog from beginning to now. Boy has Jonah grown, but he is still as adorable as ever. Poor Matt, Jonah definitely looks like his mommie, but somewhere down the road daddy's 'gene's will pop up. I agree wit the others, I could sit & look at him all day, those eyes captivate you.
Hope he slept well last night & that you & Matt got some sleep.
BTW be sure & watch the color of his skin change when he is eating lots of carrots, sweet potatoes, squash...my son turned orange from too, too much carrotine. He has a purple mouth from drinking grape juice..I had an interesting looking little boy(haha)
Lots of love & prayers
He had a purple mouth..not has!!! my typo
He's getting so big!
I totally dig baby food making, too. My favorite book ever is The Super Baby Food Book. If you don't have it -- It's a MUST have when it comes to kids and food---especially baby sized kids:-)
He is so handsome! Love those eyes.
Echo here on DEFINITELY getting the Super Baby Food book (author is Ruth Yaron) -- the most helpful part to us was the part in the back that listed each of the foods separately telling when they could start them. It's TOTALLY awesome!
By the way -- mangoes are great at that age too as some first foods. And they have a natural antiviral property -- according to the book, "mango juice poured into a test tube with live viruses actually deactivates them" (p. 446). That is in addition to the amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D in them! They just peaked as far as season goes, but you can find them sometimes at Aldi for cheap cheap and freeze the puree safely for up to 10 months.
I am so with you about making babyfood enabling us mommies to feel more connected to our babies. I never held my daughter to my breast to nurse her due to her complicated heart defect but I did pump for 7 hard months but eventually my stockpile ran out. My daughter has always been g-tube feed so I didn't even get the satifaction of oral feeding her :( Doctors put her on formulas but at 16 months I thought she couldn't possibly getting the "goodness" of whole foods to grow and thrive. I started pushing commercial stage 2 baby food thinned with her formula through her tube and she did fabulous. A couple of weeks later I started to make homemade baby food and that's when my sense of self worth increased tenfold. I too felt that I was finally contributing to her well being and helping her thrive. I LOVE knowing that I am giving her the best especially after being unable to give her my milk for so long. YOU GO GIRL!
Tu hijo esta HERMOSO!!!...se parece mucho a ti!!!
You don't know me...I love your blog...check it often...I am amazed at your faith...absolutely amazed. AND those blue eyes of Jonah's are wrecking me!!! I could get lost in that baby's eyes!! WOW!
Also, what does he wear for a shirt? Looks like a little wrap shirt? Does someone make those for Jonah? Whatever it is, I noticed it was camo! What IS it with having a baby boy that makes you think "I need camo"??!? I have the same "problem"...LOVE to dress my baby boy in camo anything. :) Strange what motherhood does to ya!
Kathryn
I agree with Jonah - no thanks to Avocados!
Those eyes - and he looks so much like you Patrice!
Hoping you got some good sleep last night!
I LOVE Jonah's eyes! He's one beautiful baby! I had to laugh at your poop talk because my hubby called me AT the dentist to tell me another of Noah's firsts... CORN POO!
i love his greasiness! he is just wonderful. save the avocados for some great guacamole!
He has the most beautiful eyes i've ever seen!!
Gosh, do all those open sores on his face and in his litle ears HURT him? I feel SO bad looking at his little face, and I see from your pictures that he's so happy, but it just seems like that must hurt!
I'm glad that you've got it in you to homemake baby food, and I'm SO glad that you've tested the magic bullet. I'm going to get one now that I know its not a POS! Thanks!
Look at those baby blues!!! He's so sweet.
Look at how chubby he is getting! Such a beautiful boy with those baby blues:)
I love reading the comments here just as much as I love your posts! I know what you mean about those fruit loop diapers, but after babysitting my niece 10 years ago, I outlawed fruit loops from my house. I just couldn't deal with it, lol. I'm glad you can find amusement from it! Amusement makes those clean up times easier to deal with. My husband will sneak in a box of Fruity Pebbles in the house every 6 months, but he knows not to give them to the kids, lol. I like that I can use the excuse that they are allergic to Red #40 so they can't have them.
I've never posted before but have followed your blog almost since the day Jonah was born. Your strength through adversity shows how strong we can be when we lean on our Heavenly Father. My sister lost their first son to Group B strep sepsis and now has 7 month old little boy so I find so many similarities between your two stories.
I made my son's babyfood too and wanted to just give a word of warning on one particular food. Isaac has sensitive skin (I know Jonah's is a million times worse) and PEARS were horrible for him. They gave him horrible diaper rash. We were worried it was due to an allergy but our pediatrician actually said that the grittiness of the pear is undigestible for some people and translates into diaper rash....just a thought as you work your way through foods. :)
Could he be any cuter? Beautiful eyes little man. Isn't it time for a video of this little guy. He is just adorable.
he looks just like you. and even greasy, he's adorable! oh those baby blues!!
