i think we're alone now

So, I'm here by myself for most of the day, although Kathryn's going to be here for a couple hours a little later on. I really haven't been with Jonah alone that much, except for a couple hours in the mornings between Matt leaving for work and someone coming around 10:00. I know that's ridiculous, but he's just extremely high maintenance, so it's a little scary to be on my own. Plus, I do better psychologically with all of it when I have the company. I could have had someone today, but purposely wanted to try it on my own. I'm actually really excited.

So far, he's been great. He woke up around 8:15, so I left him in bed to get his meds drawn and heat up his bottle. But then, he fell back asleep, so I had time to take a quick shower and pump before he woke up again. Then, he was content in his vibrating chair (remember?... the one I've wanted him to like, but he hasn't until now). After a diaper change, he ate 125 cc's (a smidge over four ounces) in only TWENTY MINUTES. I'm so excited. Not a hint of acid reflux (it's been much better for the last three days or so, but I've been afraid to say it out loud... that maybe we're getting things under control). I then did a patch up job on one of his arms, lanced a couple blisters, and now I've laid him down in his bed hoping he'll fall asleep. He's acting so tired, but when I hold him, he rubs his face back and forth on my chest, and I know that's causing new blisters. I don't hear him anymore, so I think he's drifted off. Man, it's so great to feel like I can handle this by myself. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to know you can't even take care of your own child alone. But he's finally, finally getting to a point where he will stay in the swing for more extended periods of time and is content to sit in his vibrating chair in the kitchen while I wash dishes, mix milk, switch over the laundry etc. And wow, if he will keep eating this well without all the crying and fussing, and in less than half the time it was taking... I'll be a new person. We'll be able to go out in public without me having to run out the door as soon as he finishes one feeding (that is, after a diaper change, then peeing through his diaper, then an outfit change, then spitting up, followed by another outfit change etc. and so on and so forth), just to have to feed him again in an hour and a half... in the car. He's sleeping so much better now too. He usually falls asleep around 10:00 and sleeps until 4:30, and then goes back to sleep from around 5:30 to 8:15 or so. Can you tell I'm excited? I feel like I'm finally getting a taste of "normal." Shwoo.

On another much more frustrating note, my FuzziBunz have MAJOR build up from all the Aquaphor I have to use on his legs with every diaper change. When I use a dropper and drop water on them, it immediately beads up and slides right off. They are not absorbent at all. So I've looked on line on how to strip them and am beginning trials. Last night was trial number one.

Trial Number One - red, green, yellow, and orange diapers
1. Sprayed with Green Works (couldn't find the recommended Simple Green) and let sit for 15 minutes.
2. Hot Wash with one scoop of OxiClean.
3. Second hot wash with a little bit of Dawn and a cold rinse with vinegar.
4. Third hot wash with nothing.
5. Hot wash with 1/2 the amount of 7th Generation detergent (recommended), with an extra rinse.

Result: Complete and Utter FAILURE.

Grrrr.... I have ruined ALL of my diapers. They cost $18.00 each. I'm not sure how to get the Aquaphor build up off of them, but he can't wear them without it, and he can't wear disposables because of the tight elastic. Dawn is supposed to get the Aquaphor out, so I've been scrubbing each diaper with some Dawn as I take it off, but then I get detergent build up which also repels. HELP! Sunny, any suggestions? I feel like they may be past the point of no return. Ruined. If it's not one thing, it's something else. Geez.

But, back to my good mood. I guess I better go while he's asleep. Dishes to wash, laundry to fold, diapers to burn. (JUST KIDDING. Maybe.)

My friend, LeeAnn, is in labor with her little girl as I speak. I'm so excited and can't wait to meet her. I know she and Jonah will be great friends. If you have a moment, please say a prayer for LeeAnn. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that childbirth is a complete and total miracle, and nothing is a given. I just want her little one to be here safe and sound. When any of my friends are in labor, I'm just on pins and needles the whole day until I know everything is okay. I'll try to post a picture of her as soon as they get me one. Hopefully Jonah and I can make it over to the hospital after she arrives (tomorrow maybe?). I'm sooooo excited!

Hi. Glad to hear that your day is going so well.

Have an idea for the diapers(not the ones that are messed up). I wonder if it would help to keep the diaper more absorbent if you purchased a bunch of soft flannel or other soft absorbent material and cut pieces to use as liners. You could use the aquafor on the liner and throw it away when you are done with it. But then I thought maybe the aquaphor would still soak into the diaper. Not sure, but it might help.

Jonah is still the cutest baby ever!!!!

I am so glad your first time alone with Jonah has gone well, yay! Those pics of Jonah on your previous post are so precious. I am so glad that you are getting better sleep, doesn't that make a difference? Enjoy the rest of your day!

Try to use original blue dawn only. In case you aren't already on that.

Patrice, I know that to remove petrolatum from clothing you can brush plain cornstarch into the cloth and let dry (repeating as necessary, or then washing with dawn). I hope you find something that works for the fuzzibunz!

Have you tried Lestoil or something that mechanics use to get out oil from hands or clothes? That is what my mom would use when washing clothes ALL THE TIME and it got out everything, from motor oil to blood, to rust and grass stains to everyday dirt and grim.

I hope this might work for you

Try scrubbiing by hand with Fels Naptha bar soap (under $2 a bar). If that doesn't work, try Mrs. Meyers (my personal favorite, but it is $5 a bar). Mrs. Meyers is also a more natural soap and less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Hang in there. And enjoy every victory. I am prayng for you. God bless.

Hi Patrice, are you using liquid or powdered 7th gen? This website
http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm only gave a good rating on the liquid delicate care detergent. I had some buildup problems in the beginning and found that even 1/2 the amount of detergent was too much, I needed to go down to 1/4 (1 tbsp)

I second maybe making liners. Or do you know anyone who sews? You could have someone sew you some fitted pocket diapers out of flannel. You would need to get some covers, but you could use your FB inserts in the pockets. I can get 2 diapers out of 1 yard of flannel, so roughly $2.50 a piece (even less if I use a JoAnn coupon!) Plus if you needed to toss them you wouldn't be out much money. Or have you considered prefolds? I know they aren't quite as easy as FB's but they might wash up a little better. I hope you find something that will work! I know it is frustrating when there are diaper issues.

Hi there- long time follower- friend of LeeAnn's (old co-worker, moved to TX). I've use aquafor and stuff like it over the years for other health things- and always manage to get some on my clothes. I've gotten oily stains like that out using something called LesterOil. My Mom gave it to me. You rub it in really well and then wash in hot water. Hope that helps.

Try using BIZ (just a dry detergent). Put in a bucket with a couple of scoops and let it sit for a few days. I have never found ANYTHING it can't get out....even 30 year stains out of clothes. Then wash it as normal. It always works for me.

Hope you & Jonah continue to enjoy your day together!! I was grateful to have my grandmother here right after my son was born, but I know what you mean, it's nice, too, to be alone with your baby. After she quit coming to spend the day with us it was fun to be just me & him.

Hi! I'm new to your blog and I just wanted to comment on your build up issues.
This might sound weird, but have you tried your dishwasher? The water in the dishwasher usually gets hotter than the water in the washer. Just wash them as usual, then throw them in the dishwasher w/ a little squirt of the original Dawn.
Hope this helps!
Your son is extremely cute!

Hi, never commented before, but have been following for a while. About the stripping, you may need to rinse some more to be sure that you got ALL of the Dawn out. Also, if that doesn't work, I've heard that RLR Laundry Treatment works really well. You can get it with free shipping here: http://www.momsmilkboutique.com/
Hope this helps!

I hate paying full price for new FB's - yikes ($18) they have got to be kidding me. I buy DS's diapers off www.diaperswappers.com - I just bought 8 for $75 (including shipping) - these were practically brand new, the original mama used them once. I thought it was a great deal. You will have to log on as a user, then scroll down to their forsaleortrade (FSOT) forum - look at the pockets section and there are a ton of FB's.

I 2nd the liner idea - that should help a bunch in the future.

don't give up on the dipes. the same thing happened to my bumgenius from diaper cream. there is a laundry treatment called RLR. it is great...like having brand new dipes. if you can't find it by you, i can mail you some. many cloth diaper sites recommend it and there is no damage to the dipes.

We use Shaklee products. They have a product called H2 that is amazing. Everything is all natrual and really works.

Anonymous said...

I second (third?) the liners suggestion once you get all that buildup off. They do make disposable liners specifically for cloth diapers, but old T-shirts or some cheap cotton fabric would work just as well.

Mindy said...

I haven't read all the other suggestions, so maybe someone's already posted this. We use Shaklee's products. They clean all kinds of amazing gunk, and they're completely non-toxic. I have samples I can send you to try if you'd like. Just let me know where to mail them. :)

Unknown said...

Just chiming in like the others - liners would probably help alot - you can make them out of fleece and just cut to size (then wash those seperate of the diapers). I've also heard that 7th GEN can cause buildup.
Also, in the future, if you purchase cotton diapers - they don't hold on to stuff (detergent/oils) like man-made materials (fleece/suedecloth). I don't know if you sew(or know anyone who does), but I make cloth diapers and you could make them really cheap and easy.
I know buildup is frustrating - I second the RLR and pour boiling water into the wash.
Sorry - info overload, hope some of it helps!
Congrats on a great day home alone with Jonah!

Glad Jonah and you are finding your groove. Can you pour boiling water into the washer during the cycle? The hotter water will help. Fels Naptha bars are awesome for laundry. I would also suggest liners. I know kushies makes paper ones but I LOVE using the kushies "doublers" as my liners. I hav3e super-soaker kids and the 4 layers of cotton in the doublers is awesome for absorbing more pee. Forgive me for the Walmart link but they are cheapest there : http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4601018&sourceid=1500000000000003260330&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=4601018

They are about $1 each so much cheaper and they are so easily stripped because they are cotton.

Hope this helps!!

I am alone without help today too;) Help is a lifesaver, but it is nice to just have a break to just be a family by ourselves sometimes and feel like I can handle it all on my own.

For the diapers... I have a big bottle of the Simple Green I have used on Ethan's diapers and clothing. I can drop some by if you want to try it. You are going to want to run a load of simple green/no clothes/hot water once a month anyway. We get so much aquaphor buildup in the lines that our washer will not work right unless we do that. One night we kept smelling something foul & realized that all the aquaphor made the diaper water back up and run up out of the overflow (DH would have to explain better than that).

Would you like to meet up with the kids for Chickfila sometime soon? We would love it if you feel up to it:) Or ya'll are welcome to visit at our house anytime!

There's a product in the car department at Wal-Mart called Super Clean. It's in a purple jug and is by the car cleaning supplies. I soak greasy clothes in it. It may fade them, but won't ruin them. Try that, then wash them once or twice with whatever you do his laundry with. I promise it takes oil and butter out of my clothes. I had my washer break one time, throwing oily spots all over my clothes which didn't show up till they were dried! They were ruined, so I had nothing to lose. I ran hot water into a large dishpan, or use your tub or laundry sink, and some of the Super Clean. The only thing that happened was my black pants faded slightly into a dark charcoal gray, but the grease was gone. Please let me know if you try it and it works, on my two cents worth blog. =)
PS it's only about $6 a gallon and you dilute it.

You could possibly use some 4X4's or other guaze as liners, they would (hopefully) block most of the Aquaphor from the FB, at the same time allowing the urine to go to the diaper, they are cheap, and quick!!! Good luck!!

Have you ever heard of Lestoil it is a cleaner for floors and many other things, I use this for greasy stuff. I also use aquaphor and it seems to take it out for me. My husband gets greasy foods on his clothes and it works for that as well. Try it out and see what you think. It does have a smell to it, but I normally just wash them again on a normal cycle and they are fine.

If you scroll down slightly and look to the left, under nature medicine, there is an interesting and encouraging article about a possibly cure for JEB. They may be getting close to cure the disease permanantly!

Sarah said...

Yeah, I'd try letting them soak in the blue Dawn for awhile. And then I'd use fleece liners inside the Fuzzi Bunz to help keep the aquaphor away from the diapers.

I wonder if you could switch to something like prefolds with fleece covers if the problem persists? The prefolds can be absolutely abused (down to bleach and such) without being destroyed and fleece covers (at least the kind I have) have really soft elastic IME...you wouldn't have to pin or anything, just fold. They would be more bulky though :(

Erika said...

Hi, I'm so glad to hear you're doing well on your own with Jonah! Yay!

As for the diapers, I have dealt with build up on my Fuzzi Bunz before too. What worked the best for me was RLR. It's a laundry additive and it works by stripping extra detergent and junk out of the fabric. You can usually find it in the grocery store hanging in a little packet near things like Bleach, etc.

Also sometimes, you just need to wash and wash and wash with super hot water. A pain and time consuming, but it does work.

I hope that helps! Like I said, I've dealt with build-up & repelling issues before & I know how frustrating it can be. I hope you find something that works!

Also if Jonah can tolerate it, I recommend putting some fleece in between the diaper and his skin - I use that if I ever need to use diaper rash cream.

Good luck! Thinking of you!

I second checking out diaperswappers.com
The ladies over there are wonderful and may have more suggestions on how to strip the aquafor. I also second, third, fourth (whatever number we're on!) the liners - if you do them out of microfleece it would be the same fabric that is already on the inside of the fuzzibunz. You need to be sure and buy microfleece, not polar fleece (polar fleece is what's used for covers and will repel instead of letting the pee through).
If you are interested in a cheaper option - prefolds are much easier than they appear and you would just need polar fleece covers. Feel free to email me and I can try and answer your questions.

Three suggestions on the diapers:
1. When I've had to strip my BumGenius, I've had to wash on hot 6-7 times with nothing.

2. Try RLR laundry treatment. It is fantastic for stripping whatever is left on the diapers. I get mine at www.wildflowerdiapers.com, or I can mail some to you if you'd like. Just email me.

3. I used to use 7th Gen. detergent and had problems with that causing stink and repelling. Try Country Save or Allen's Naturally. I know that the Aquaphor is really what's causing the problem, but the detergent might not be helping.

Good luck! I really would doubt that the diapers are totally ruined. I bet they just need some extra work from all of that greasy Aquaphor!

Hi, Patrice. I know you're a Target lover, but I have some Wal-Mart advice for ya... (Don't shoot the messenger!)

Try Cascade. However, I must warn you it will bleach them out some. Also, washable diapers are cheapest on Ebay!

Sarrah said...

we use a homemade laundry soap on our clothes and i thought it was ok to just use that on the diapers. well it caused major build up and after a pee, the diaper would still be completely dry. i ended up just washing them on hot about 10 times in a row with nothing added to the water. it did the trick! now, i always make sure to wash them again on hot after the initial wash to make sure everything is out.

Brooke said...

I hope today is going well for you and Jonah, Patrice.

I don't want to bombard you with another different stripping routine (straight blue Dawn has worked best for me), but no one has mentioned yet that pocket diapers with microfleece or suede cloth inners need pressure on them to make the liquid absorb into the diaper/insert. Even on stripped dipes, the water will bead and roll off if you just spray it on...

Though, with the amount of Aquaphor you need to use, I definitely agree they'll need stripping often, and microfleece liners would be a great solution. I order Malden Mills microfleece online. It's inexpensive, you can cut rectangles to fit the width and length of the FB (yay for fleece not fraying), and when they're no longer as soft as they need to be for Jonah, you can throw them away. I know you don't have much time, but maybe someone helping you out could cut them for you one afternoon.

Lesli said...

HI!

I had some major build up on my diapers, and used dawn on them. The one thing I have not seen posted yet was that I took a stiff brush to the fleece and really worked the dawn in. It took a while to do this with all of my dipes, but it really helped. You can also turn up your water heater and that will help with washing them.(Just b careful as you get used to the new setting. I nearly scalded myself once!!)

I know you've already dropped a buttload of money on Fuzzibuns, but have you thought about giving Happy Heiny pocket diapers a try? Their sized pocket diapers (NOT the new one-size diaper) have no leg casings. So only the soft fleece comes into contact with baby's skin even on back area. So maybe you wouldn't even need to use aquaphor. Maybe buy one and see if you think it would work??

http://www.happyheinys.com/pocket_diapers.php

I've never really had to strip my dipes so no advice there. But I did buy cheep fleece from Walmart and cut it into strips to line my diapers with when I need to use some desitin on the rare occasion that my little one gets diaper rash.

I have posted a few times about the diapers. I use liners, I use cheap fleece from joanns. You can use anything as liners. The best way to strip, for me that is- is to just rinse, rinse, rinse on hot. You may need to boil some water to get it hot enough. Baking soda might help to take some of the aquaphor off. You could call one of the diaper places that sell fuzzi bunz, they should have some suggestions.
My main suggestion is to STOP USING AQUAPHOR on the diaper area. I know that you need to use it to prevent blisters however Northern Essense is basically the same consistency and would prevent blisters also- the best thing, it is cloth diaper friendly! There are other cloth diaper friendly diaper ointments, but I haven't found any that are that consistency. You can google Northern Essence. It is worth a try. If you can't get your diapers to stop repelling you could put a liner over the microfleece insert and place it ontop of the diaper instead of inside.
Oh and Dawn actualy doesn't work very well for a great deal of people. I would stop using the Dawn. My cloth diaper friends have only had problems with it. I use regular Tide powder. Allens Naturally is also good.

An old family trick that I've heard many times is Scrubbing Bubbles for Vaseline / ointment type stains. You would have to rinse several times - but after all the cycles that you've already done, that would be a breeze! Try on one -- I don't want to be responsible for ruining Jonah's $18 diapers!

Just wanted to add my vote for Lestoil. Has worked on everything I've used it for.

I've heard good things about Lestoil, but I never had much luck with it on stains, and I will say it stinks and will definately require a second wash. It might be good though since you are dealing with grease, not stains.

My other thought is a soak in Pine Sol (with a second wash after of course), it's meant to break down soap scum. That might help get the detergent out and then you can go back to dawn or lestoil to get the aquaphor off. Long overnight soaks in the above might help too, rather than straight washes.

To be honest, it might not be bad to just keep a bucket of what works for you filled up and just put diapers in there as you go, so they can start soaking right away... the longer the better always!

I will say oxy is GREAT for stains though (make it concentrated!!)... it gets out the carrots (when you get to them, they are STUBBORN), as well as if you get into mold issues ever (we all do!). And Clorox 2 is great for poop and vomit stains... just a side note. ;o)

Good luck!!

Try Lestoil, it takes out everything. My husband farms and I can get out all of the grease from the machinery. I've used it on my daughters clothes too. It does have an after smell to the clothing, but just rewash in whatever detergent you normally would. I've used it on grease to red pop and it all came out. Good luck and I'm glad you had a great day with Jonah!!

Sorry about the diapers. If you need to buy more fuzzi bunz I would look at the fuzzi bunz site that they list diapers that have small defects. You can get them there for about 10.00. I would also contact the owner of fuzzi bunz. She has donated hundreds of diapers for other causes and it would be worth asking her if she could help you out. Just curious, did you ever get the diapers that Mckmama had a contest for?

You can try a product called Charlie's Soap for the build up - I usually get mine at Whole Foods there in Winston. I know it is great for cloth diapers and helping them keep absorbancy. You can find it in the laundry detergent aisle of Whole Foods or order online (much less expensive to pick up at the store)

Abbye

I would try boiling a big pot of water on the stove, adding laundry detergent(Tide-it is the best!)iapers in that. You need the water be hot enough to "melt" out the aquaphor. Try and let us know how it works. It may take a couple cycles.

Did you ever get that huge stash of Imse Vimse diapers from MckMama????

I know you have a bajillion comments already, but what's one more, right? I used cloth for 15 months on my daughter and plan on using it from birth with the next bean. As far as getting the aquaphor out...I'm not sure about that. I would recommend going to Cloth Diaper Nation or a similar cloth diaper community (this one is computer virus free, unlike DS) for some advice. There's bound to be someone on there who has dealt with similar issues. As far as preventing the buildup, I used rectangles of no-pill fleece in every diaper with my kiddo. If they poo, just throw the fleece away. It's cheap, and it keeps the skin dry. Whenever she had a rash and I was using diaper creme, the creme never got on the diapers. For the occasional stripping, RLR is great. You just put it in with clean diapers in hot hot water and rinse until there are no more bubbles. It usually took about 7 rinses with mine. Good luck!

I know that this is a chemical and you would need to rinse the diapers before using them, but if nothing else has worked this might be worth a try before giving up and buying new. I have used a product called "Krud Cutter". It works WELL. It has even taken out crayon that was washed and dryed with a load.

It is a pretty strong product but I am sure it would work. It says that it will take out greasy, oily messes. I found it in the adhesive remover section of the hardware section of my walmart.

I hope this helps.

I read about Charlie's Soap on another blog this week and did some follow-up reading. It came to mind when I read your post. I must say I have never used it but am VERY interested in purchasing it when my supply of soap gets low. It is safe and non-toxic and the testimonials on facebook and their webpage say it gets out grease without all the work and chemicals that other posts have suggested. Here's the link: http://www.charliesoap.com/ It looks like they have a money back guarantee as well if you're not satisfied.

Have you tried pouring boiling water over the diapers to break up the oil? The next step I would try is baby powder. I would coat the diaper and let it absorb as much as possible-scrape off the build up and apply more baby powder. I would then do the boiling water again and baby powder if necessary and then try washing them. It may take more than one try. There is also this stuff I cbought at a dollar store-I can not remember the name, It came in a tub container and was super thick but got grease and grime off of stuff. I also purchased some stuff called Awesome from the dollar store and it has gotten a ton of stuff out for me. Auqafor is basically vaseline and so you need something that will cut throw tehe grease-one reason I suggested boiling water.I put all kinds of tips like this on my blog.

Hello,

I used FB cloth with my daughter as well and though her eczam doesn't compare to Jonah's sensitive skin; she did require diaper cream or a thick layer of Cetaphil cream at all times. I used a microflece, no sew, no seam liner in all my diapers and when they got too bad just threw them out...

I cannot recall exactly which seller I got them from (ebay) but I have included two links for the same product. I am sure if you contact the seller directly they may make you a deal. I bought 30 at once to save on money (both cost and shipping).

I hope this helps.

Try that : )

As well, although I do not have a blog, I follow yours and pray for you all and wish Jonah all the best. I know that God is using all of your experiences and pains to further His Kingdom.

Although we do not know you, we love you. God Bless!

Is there any other diapers you can use other than FB? I know they can't have elastic but I wasn't sure if that was the only brand you use?.?
Praying for you and precious Jonah.
