jonah draws
We've tried coloring a couple of times but Jonah has never been able to put enough pressure behind his coloring tool to really get it. We switched from crayons to pip-squeak markers, but when he'd try, the paper would move with the marker. Well, today, I let him color on the back of a thick paper plate, and it clicked.

We absolutely love those markers. I am also a fan of taping paper down on to the highchair. I love the paper they use to wrap delicates at Target because it's big so I can wrap it all around the highchair table and tape it on the bottom. I see a lot of coloring adventures in your future!

I noticed him holding the marker in his left hand, and I knew Meg would notice that too. Lefties rule, according to both my daughters.

So cute! My Caleb (19 mo) is finally getting the hang of coloring w/ crayons....gotta watch him close to make sure he's not snacking on them LOL! He loves it!
He's a budding artist! Much more artwork to come, I'm sure. Just make sure he doesn't ever find it in the trashcan. They HATE that. ;)

How fun! You know, another fun thing to do with him is making pudding of different colors and letting him go to town with that. I use to use it with my kiddos who needed some extra help in the fine motor department and who had feeding issues. I would set them outside with on some paper and let them draw so to speak with the chocolate pudding. Though messy, it was the always a big hit and they even loved licking it off their fingers. Thought this might be a good idea for your little man. Just a dap on his high chair will go a long way!! Enjoy. He is such a sweetheart. My kids adore reading about him.

Such a cute post! I have been reading your blog for a long time, but have just never commented... When I was a nanny, I always ran into the same problem of the paper moving around while trying to color.
I would tape down a piece of paper onto a cookie sheet...that way, the kids could move it all around, and they always had someplace (acceptable!) to color! The paper didn't move, and they could take it with them!

I just remembered I use to tape the paper down for my kids when they first started drawing.
I just wanted to share that as I was looking at this my son was asking me questions about Jonah. Not once did he say anything about his owies! I thought for sure he would, but he didn't. He is 3 years old and was more curious about what Jonah's name was, what was on his shirt, what he was doing, who you and your husband were!
Patrice, I have been reading your blog for some time but this is my first comment. Yes, I'm a lurker! LOL! Anyway, what I wanted to say was I have been a teacher for 20 yrs. and what we would do with the preschool age children is tape the paper to the table or his highchair tray and he can color away and no one has to stand right next to him and hold it. Just a thought.

I love the first time coloring shots! GO JONAH! I agree, tape down the paper so that it stays in place.
Good thing the markers are non-toxic and washable! LOL He would NOT be the first child to try to eat or suck on a marker, or even color themselves. My Jonah (21 months old) colors sometimes with the big 'my first' crayons, and the last time he ATE the orange. I washed his mouth out as best as I could, I also had to brush his teeth for 15 minutes before the brush stopped turning orange.... The funny thing is, he didn't bite from the ends, he took a bite from the middle but not quite enough to break the crayon in half, just enough to make a big bite out of it.
Yay Jonah!!! That's some fancy artwork you got going on there. It's just plain beautiful!
