jonah update

I'm very tired tonight. We've had a full day. I have lots of cute pics (family came to us), but I am way too tired to upload and edit tonight.

Jonah is still not feeling well and barely eating. I'm afraid we are on the road to dehydration but praying that will not be the case. His skin has some really bad spots right now (big spot running across his back, one of his underarms, and a big spot all the way around one elbow) in addition to his normal face, hands, toes stuff. Of course that makes the risk of dehydration greater. I didn't keep up with his wet diapers today, but plan to tomorrow. I'm trying to get an ounce of Pedialyte in him here and there, but he's not being very cooperative. And then when I do get him to eat a little or take a little Pedialyte, the coughing makes him throw it up half the time. Frustrating.

Anyway, I had been pretty relaxed about all of it, but tonight it started getting to me. He only ate about three ounces and maybe 20 cc's of Pedialyte and then puked it. Typically he has been taking eight to ten ounces per bottle. I know he's lost weight, but I don't even care about that right now. I just want to make sure he's staying hydrated.

We had a nice day today. My mom and siblings came for dinner. We hid Easter Eggs in the yard and Matt, Peyton, and Shaina played a couple games of H-O-R-S-E. Lots of eating and laughing. I was a little cloudy though... just sad that Jonah's not well and Gabe's missing out (or we're missing out on him, rather). Like I said, if Jonah can stay hydrated, we'll be alright, but I'm afraid if he doesn't pick up the eating or take the Pedialyte more willingly tomorrow, we may have some trouble.

Hopefully I'll have some good news tomorrow... but probably no photos until Tuesday. Tomorrow night is GriefShare.

Hope everyone had a nice Easter.

I don't know if this helps, but I know a child who was hospitalized for dehydration last week and they told his mother that when a child drinks and then vomits, they still take in about 50% even if it looks like a big gusher. So hopefully he's getting some of the Pedialite and you can avoid dehydration!! Must be so hard when you have a child who is already a fussy eater/drinker.

Praying for Jonah to be able to take his bottles again. (And always for the entire solids thing). Just keep giving him those sips! I'm glad yall's Easter was fun in the midst of this. Your post on it was more than wonderful. Praying for this sweet boy to feel better.

Love you, girl. I'm feeling overwhelmed right now, too, for totally different and less serious reasons. As I'm praying for my own peace and mental health tonight, I'll be praying for yours. Love to sweet Jonah and Matt, and I will pray for hydration, too!

We will keep Jonah in our prayers for healing. I know it it so hard to see your little one sick. We have been dealing with sickness with our 2 smallest ones too. Hopefully you are able to get him to take the pedialite.
Big hugs.

Would Jonah be interested in frozen pedialyte? I wonder if a popsicle type thing might interest him, often something cold is appealing. It might be a way to get a bit of fluid in, every teaspoon counts according to our doc. And have you tried concentrated gelatin....jello made with less water, so it is quite rubbery but easier for kiddos to pick up and put in their mouth.
Praying for improvement and peace for your worry.

I don't know if it's appropriate to share this with you or not, but I suffer from dehydration as a consequence of a disease, and I know that when I begin throwing up everything I take down that I am still keeping a majority of it in my system.

Have you tried giving him Gatorade? I use Gatorade to help.

Keeping Jonah and you and Matt in our prayers.

Praying for Jonah and for YOU from Iowa. God hears. God knows. Talk to Him. Lean on Him. I think the frozen thing sounds like the answer. I like the jello and gatoraid ideas too. Have you ever tried sips with a syringe with a bulb like you give meds with? Maybe that would make getting sips fun!!!

Patrice - if you have a decent scale by far the easiest way to keep track of fluid loss is by weighing him. Before/after each bath, dressing change and diaper change.

Thinking of you all - hope the Jonut is feeling better very very soon.

Jonah is so beautiful! I just wanted to encourage you...I am a mom of a 2.5 year old with cerebral palsy who drank a bottle for a little over a year and then ended up on a g-tube. Hydration/feeding is SO stressful and really made me quite a crazy woman for several months. I am praying for you all and just want you to know you are SUCH a beautiful family. God is glorified and our faith is strengthened by your lives!

On our trip to the Children's ER they gave us a cup gatorade (or pedialyte for you) with a syringe for dispensing (kinda like the ones that come with infants motrin). It did seem to help a little with getting liquids in. Just an idea - will be praying for you guys.
