a fall :(

Not really "cute" photos tonight. Jonah took had a bad fall around 5:30. We were downstairs setting up for dressing change. Jonah has a little chair down there he rocks in. One minute he was rocking and the next he was turned around on his knees, backwards on the chair and tipped the whole thing over. He fell straight on his face. For a normal kid, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal. He didn't fall far. But for Jonah, well, here's the damage: skin off his nose, blistered upper lip, the area between the lip and nose became one huge blister, skin off his cheek all the way up to his eye, and a new raw spot on his forehead (the one in the center).  He also blistered on the inside of the upper lip and is very swollen there, but he won't let me look at it. These photos are unedited.

I really try to stay positive. And I know as far as severe forms of EB go, we have it pretty good. We're not dealing, so far at least, with trachs or corneal abrasions or digit fusing and contractures. But man, one little fall does all this?! It breaks my heart.

Please pray for sweet Jonah's face. I'm especially worried about him rubbing it at night and continuing to reopen it and for his upper lip. His lips take FOREVER to heal, even when it's just a little one on the corner of his mouth. But his whole upper lip? This is going to be a nightmare. And the shallow part of me is so sad that all of our Christmas photos this year will be tainted with the evidence that we let him fall and smash up his face. :(

And while you are praying, please pray for Tripp and Daylon also. Tripp is having a very rough road with no signs of consistent improvement. Daylon was supposed to go back to CA tomorrow, but he's had brain surgery with some ups and downs with vomiting episodes, fevers, and blood pressures, so he can't go yet. His  mommy is hoping they'll get to head home on the 23rd, but Daylon needs to have some turn arounds for that to happen. Please keep all our boys in your prayers.

Oh, my sweet baby boy! I'm so sorry he fell. You guys are so careful with him that things like this rarely happen ... which makes it more of a shock for you when they do. Of course, he looks like he's handling it like the champ he is.

Can't wait to see you later this week!

Oh, sweet baby! I know that feeling in the pit of your stomach when your baby gets hurt. It's a horrible feeling. I feel it now for Jonah. But he heals pretty quick. And just for the record...you didn't "let him fall." It's just part of being a toddler. He's going to fall and NO ONE expects you guys to keep him fall free. He's still the cutest thing.

Don't beat yourself up! Falls are a part of toddlerhood. I can imagine it would be hard to have a constant reminder of one, though. As you already know, Jonah is gorgeous. Seriously, a beautiful child. I just said a prayer that his face and lip would heal quickly and that his daily functioning would not be affected. Merry Christmas!

heartbreaking. Praying for you, and Jonah. And, you didnt' "let him fall and smash his face up". You can only live in a bubble to a certain extent. Please don't beat yourself up. You are an awesome mom!

I'm with everyone else - I don't think you let him fall! He's a quick little guy, and he's a toddler! He's going to be curious and test his limits. Yes, you are there to protect him - and you do an AWESOME job! This is just the kind of stuff that toddlers do :( I'm so sorry - for all of you - that this is what happens when Jonah takes a spill. Praying for a quick recovery (no rubbing, Jonah!) - and for peace in your mommy heart.

All of your Christmas photos this year will be touched with the evidence that you tried to let Jonah live as much of a "normal" childhood as possible! Kudos to you for letting him explore and not making him overly afraid of life!

I am so sorry about Jonah, but please know that it was not your fault. Little explorers get hurt, and I know that's different in Jonah's case. God send his healing hand to Jonah and comfort and peace to you two parents.
God Bless!

I am praying for a quick-healing, non-sleeping rubbing recover for baby J. You are a rockstar for being such a strong mom and Jonah is a legend among Rockstars for being such a adorably, strong boy. Hope you all have a blessed Christmas!

oh girl! I am so sorry. This looks so painful - poor baby!

You cannot blame yourself for this - you have to let him be a kid. You can't put him in a bubble. He will soon learn his own limitations and accidents will happen - they are unavoidable!

You know you always have my prayers, as well as Daylon and Tripp.

Call if you need to and EB Venting session!

I hope with what You share in your blog and photos more people will give to EB so we can find something to help all the children with EB. Remember he is such a cute little man even with his sores. These pictures hurt my heart, so I can imagine how bad they make you feel. I agree with the others, though, YOU did not LET him fall~ it happens to everyone. :(

The fall isn't great news but you can still see that Jonah twinkle in his eyes. This is his normalcy and all he knows. He's strong. He's beautiful. Just like his mama. Hang in there.

I am so sorry! :( Don't beat yourself up! Falls happen. You didn't 'let' him fall. You both are careful parents who do a great job! I will be praying for his face to heal quickly!

My EB mommy heart feels your pain. No matter how much you know its not your fault- you still feel guilty because they are the ones that have to continue with the pain. And as far a "severe" forms of EB- it doesn't matter, because the feeling you have seeing your child suffer is the sameno matter the type. I love you. If you need to vent again soon, I'm ready;)
Ps- J gets cuter and cuter every time you post a picture. Love him and you:)

Dear Patrice: So sorry that Jonah took a header. He is a little boy after all. He still looks so stinkin cute.

Your not alone, my heart broke too when I saw his precious little face. YOU ARE BOTH GREAT PARENTS. All children fall, it is normal. It is an impossible task to keep a active, curious, toddler from falling.

Let the Christmas photo's remind you of what wonderful parents you are, how much you have overcome and how well you take care of this growing active boy.

Poor guy! That breaks my heart!
Don't beat yourself up over it...you're allowing him to be a little boy and enjoy life. I've had tons of guilt for Daylon's blisters and tears, but there comes a point when living in a bubble isn't fun for them. You're a great mommy! Love, Jennifer
PS- thanks for the extra prayers for Daylon! You're so thoughtful! :)

I am not a medical professional or familiar with EB, but I'm a big fan of "Bag Balm" for scabs. It draws out the bacteria or pus, softens the scab, and leaves your skin so soft and smooth. It makes me heal so much faster.

Only drawback is that it's a little messy, so a bandage/dressing or bedtime application is best.

You can get it at some drug stores, or check a pet store since it was originally for cows.
