crazy jonah

So we had a great weekend, and I have many a cute photo to share, but I have to interrupt my (not so regularly scheduled) post to share this video.

You know how your kids just seem to stay the same and not learn anything new for several weeks, and then they learn like five new tricks in two days? We've had that kind of weekend. In the last three days, Jonah has waved bye-bye (although it was only one time... but was most certainly a bye-bye wave... I have witnesses), learned to give kisses, learned to high five, and lastly...

... has developed a strong preference for the color purple... as you can clearly see.

(And no, we don't usually sit around torturing our child for kicks and giggles and good video material... but sometimes we do.)

Kids are SO crazy. I just can't believe how he's changing and growing and learning so many new things. I mean, I know he's delayed (obviously), but I'm just so proud of the huge strides he's made in this last week or so.

On that same note, he ate his ENTIRE breakfast, lunch, and dinner BY MOUTH, and we only had to use the g-tube for his water and meds. (You can pick your mouth up off the floor now.) I know it probably won't last but HOLYCOW HOTDANG WOOHOO my child ate over 1,000 calories of SOLIDS today.

He's also pulling up to his knees and playing that way regularly these days. And today he was crawling around (mostly chasing after the purple ball) more than ever. He was so active compared to even a week ago. It's like he's just had this burst of energy and learning. Maybe that's what eating will do for you!

And on a two-steps-forward-one-step-back-that's-Jonah-for-you kind of note, although he now opens his mouth for food, he's started lifting his tongue up and getting confused about how the mechanics of eating go. Before, he knew how to open and swallow, but the psychological aversion was our problem. Now it seems that we've made some strides in that department (I'm not so naive to think this will for sure last), he's forgotten the physical skill of opening his mouth and taking the spoon. So, needless to say, that's frustrating and food goes everywhere, and feedings still take about ten times longer than they should, but we'll take what we can get! It's still a huge victory overall.

I'll blog about our weekend later on in the week. Jonah had a play date on Friday with some cutie twin girls (La-dies Man, I tell ya) AND got to go to the Children's Museum on Friday night. Fun times. Hope yours was as great as ours. Cute photos to come (tomorrow hopefully?).

  1. Glad to hear he's doing so well! I know he has his own issues with food but sometimes I think he's just being a typical toddler when he refuses to eat! Sometimes they eat good, then the next day the favorites are refused! Anyway, you're doing a great job and I am glad to hear the happiness in your words tonight!

  2. Love the video. Hope that some of the eating pattern continues throughout the week.

Oh, and even my husband admitted he has been doing EB research just so he could understand a little more about Jonah. We love following his stories.

  3. Love the video, he is such a joy!

I was on a cruise for a week, and the first thing I did on my trip home (after calling my mom to check on my own son) was to visit your blog on my phone so I could get a Jonah update! I can't get enough of your sweet boy, and your lovely family!!!

    Continually praying from Arkansas,

  6. oh my word, that is SO funny! He is just so cute - and his face looks really good these days!

Caroline will be thrilled that he likes the purple ball - purple is her favorite color (and has been ever since she was about 2!)

Praise God that he's eating well, and I'll pray that continues.

Hope you have a great Monday - give that sweet Jonah lots of hugs from Team Anderson!

    Love,
    Laura

  13. Oh my gosh, I might have peed my pants I was laughing so hard at that video. I think we have a few priceless ones of us doing something not so nice to one of our kids for a reaction.
    Love it!

  16. Jonah definitely has a strong opinion about that purple ball, huh? Very cute video, made me laugh!
But, what really made me so happy was hearing how well Jonah did with eating! Yea little guy! My EJ had a great couple of days with eating as well. May be they are on the same schedule?

  19. That was cute--I am so excited that Jonah knew to pull the handle to get his Purple ball back.

Way to go on his eating, of course he probably hasn't eaten a bite today. I think Jonah is just showing you he is in charge. If he could eat all of that yesterday, then he could eat all the time, but he says "no no I am the boss".

I loved the pictures you posted Friday..he has grown so much.

Hope you have an awesome week...love & prayers

  20. Quick. Try and find a replacement purple ball now, before he actually looses the one he has.It could get ugly. At a yard sale, maybe? Any thought to feeding therapy or is he not old enough.

  21. Hi! I have been following your blog for awhile now and Jonah is such a cutie pie!!! I have a daughter that is very close to him in age and I wanted to tell you that I don't see Jonah as very delayed at all! My Caylee is doing very similar things to him and she is a very picky eater too! Sometimes I think it just depends on the kiddo!!! Anyway just thought I would let you know that he seems to be doing really well from what you tell us and the only thing Caylee is doing different from him is walking and she really only started that a month ago!! So Go Jonah Go!!! he will be running before you know it!!

  22. That was such a cute video, maybe Jonah is going to be an ECU fan! So glad things are going well. I am excited for you and Jonah that he is learning new things every day, he will be walking before you know it, then the fun really begins. He is really growing and so precious.

  30. Aren't they the cutest at this age? I started reading your blog a few days after my daughter got out of the NICU [she's 11 days older than Jonah :)] and have been a faithful reader ever since. I love me some baby Jonut :) I love to see him grow and pass milestones. He is truly a little miracle!

And you are one fabulous mama :)

I do admit to torturing/teasing my son for photo ops. Aren't we just awful?! tee hee He's 16 now, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't traumatized by it.
